GOLDEN1 CENTER - SACRAMENTO KINGS ARENA - SACRAMENTO, CA

ClarkDietrich Engineering provided engineering, exterior modeling and layout drawings for the Sacramento Kings Arena.  This include the all the soffits and parapets along with the walls around the adjacent practice facility.  Coordination drawings were produced for the field to layout critical soffit framing and curved/angled parapets that ran around the main arena.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

A Design Build contract, faced with many challenges in constructing the framing scope of work. East exterior wall assembly was constructed with 48' tall metal framed wall panels stacked which were erected, sheathed and weather proofed next to existing building. All of this activity, performed in a 22" wide cavity up to four stories high. The nature of the arena with all the open space brought challenges with coordinating trades to fit in the ceiling spaces.  CDES utilized BIM, engineering and collaboration with the field team to be able to fit all required systems into the building as desired by the design team.

CANAL WALK V - RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

CDES provided coordination drawings based off the EOR's engineering along with panel drawings that were used to prefabricate all the load bearing and shear walls for the interior and exterior of the building.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

Canal Walk V is an 8 Story load bearing project that included a partial first floor parking garage with 2 story loft units on the ground level and additional living units above.  The eighth floor was a smaller foot print to allow for a private deck for the residence along with a roof top garden above the 7th floor.  Lower level panels also integrated the use of HSS posts into the panels at some shear wall locations.  The first floor slab also stepped 6" at each grid for a total of 2'-0" difference in panel heights from one side to the next.

WILLIAM P. HOBBY AIRPORT EXPANSION PROJECT, HOUSTON, TX

ClarkDietrich’s engineering team produced shop drawings that included reference plans, section cuts, and framing details for all interior load‐bearing and exterior framing conditions. To complete the framing for such a large project in an accurate and timely manner, the BIM team coordinated and modeled every stud and track required to frame all the interior and exterior partitions and soffits.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

By coordinating with other trades and creating panel drawings with represented partition MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing services) penetrations, the subcontractor was able to layout and frame large sections of interior framing prior to any MEP installation. Being accurate and on time with the panel drawings allowed sub the luxury of framing without interference from any other trades while also eliminating the need for re‐work in the field.

Southwest Airlines established a hub at Hobby Airport and wanted to expand its international flight offerings, requiring an expansion for the international terminal. The plan called for five new terminal gates and a new parking garage. The project required complex engineering challenges and framing designs with short construction deadlines. Detailed panel drawings and extensive coordination between the engineering and BIM teams were critical to completing the project on time. The project was completed in October 2015.

The  Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI Design Excellence Awards recognize small and large projects that exemplify excellence in the structural design of new or renovated structures utilizing cold-formed steel products. ClarkDietrich Engineering Services, LLC (CDES) was awarded 3rd place for the William P. Hobby Airport Expansion Project in Houston, TX during the recent 2016 CFSEI/MASFA (Mid-Atlantic Steel Framing Alliance) Expo at the Historic Inns of Annapolis in Annapolis, Maryland.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

The coordination drawings, which were created from the BIM model, indicated where the stud framing was to be placed.  The exterior wall panels were then assembled off-site, using the coordination drawings generated from the BIM model, along with the exterior finish.

There was a great amount of coordination that took place to work around the existing structural conditions requiring specialty connection details designed by ClarkDietrich Engineering and to assure all preassembled panels fit precisely in their designated locations.

On May 19th, 2015 ClarkDietrich Engineering Services was voted First Place, winning the 2015 CFSEI Award for Design Excellence by working on this project.  See award below:

JENNIE SEALY REPLACEMENT HOSPITAL - GALVESTON, TEXAS

ClarkDietrich’s largest BIM project to date is the Jennie Sealy Replacement Hospital in Galveston, Texas. The hospital features nearly 250 rooms, surgical suites and intensive-care space. In total, the hospital will encompass 758,000 sq. ft. throughout a seven-level base building with twin towers, each having six levels.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

ClarkDietrich Engineering Services’ scope was to provide engineering services for the exterior of the building while providing BIM modeling for the interior and exterior of the hospital. The specific BIM requirements were outlined in detail in the project specifications and the BIM execution plan. Below is a list of the key BIM requirements:

  • Provide color-coded walls to help the contractor/GC identify key system performance characteristics of walls, such as fi re- and sound-ratings.
  • Provide a model of all framing to be installed within the hospital to allow for coordination with other trades.
  • Provide wall backing modeling to facilitate installation.
  • Provide coordination drawings, which include fully dimensioned layout drawings for all of the framing.

Due to the amount of coordination that was completed on the front-end of the project, the contractor is expecting a large amount of labor savings. Using ClarkDietrich’s wall and framing modeling during collaboration meetings, the contractor was quickly able to identify issues regarding code compliance and clearly provide direction on how certain areas should be constructed. Metal stud framing products specified within the model include ClarkDietrich Building Systems’ ProSTUD® Drywall Framing System and MaxTrak® slotted deflection track. Correct products and installation methods were identified up front so the proper materials could be procured. Conversations pertaining to the installation were conducted long before the metal stud construction started.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY CONCERT HALL – DANBURY, CT...

Project included a leaning (yes, leaning) 96-ft tall 10-in wall section that the contractor assembled on the ground and lifted into place.  Two studs (50-ft and 46-ft long) stacked end to end to make up the 96-ft section.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMAGE GALLERY

These studs along with every other exterior stud for the project were modeled covering every intricate framing detail required for this very complex building.  The model was used extensively throughout to assist in engineering, to create value engineering, and also to assist the contractor with visualization  to recognize means and methods issues up front.  Weekly coordination meetings with the contractor utilizing the model allowed for a clear understanding of the project requirements, a set of shop drawings representative of the model, and a very successful, award winning project. Project made the CFSEI 2013 Award for Design Excellence.
