ClarkDietrich Receives First-Place Award for Design Excellence from Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute

June 19, 2018 - West Chester, OH - ClarkDietrich Engineering Services has been recognized for its design expertise with a first-place award in the Design Excellence category (Residential Division) from the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI). Since 2013, the annual CFSEI awards have acknowledged outstanding achievements in creative design, technical innovation and best practices in the use of cold-formed steel.

ClarkDietrch received the prestigious award for its role in the design and construction of the new AIT Barracks in Monterey, CA. The facility was commissioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to serve as a modernized, private-sector residence for 320 Defense Language Students. The $52 million, 110,000 square foot structure included a four-story, load-bearing, cold-formed steel structure that required a number of outside the box solutions to keep the project on time and on budget. From high seismic loading, antiterrorism requirements and a mix of cold-formed steel, masonry and structural steel, the project encompassed several design challenges.

ClarkDietrich served as both the specialty cold-formed engineer as well as the project Engineer of Record. Chad Casbon, Director of ClarkDietrich Engineering Services, says the project was an overall team effort and would not have been possible without total collaboration among all project team members, which included expertise from SVA Architects, Inc., McClure Engineering Company and SWI Finishing, Inc.

“This project highlights how collaboration can bring true value to a construction project, and we couldn't have been more pleased on how it turned out,” said Casbon. “Having our work recognized by CFSEI and receiving a first-place award for design excellence is a huge accomplishment for us and we are honored to be awarded with such an accolade.”

The ClarkDietrich engineering team has developed more than 4,000,000 square feet of BIM coordinated models. The team is capable of creating all of the above including calculations, shop drawings, BIM models and panel/fabrication drawings. With 4 engineering offices and over 50 engineers and technicians on staff, the team has the ability to handle any cold-formed steel engineering needs.
