This SkillsUSA Championships is part of the annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, taking place June 23-27th in Kansas City, MO. The carpentry competition will have nearly 75 participants that will frame walls using wood and steel studs, cut and install rafters, as well as, install fascia board, sheathing and or exterior siding and trim. Contestants will be judged on accuracy, ability to read and interpret blueprints, workmanship, safety and the proper use of tools, equipment and materials.

Boyd Worsham, of Jacksonville-based The Haskell Company, serves as technical committee chairperson for the SkillsUSA Carpentry Competition and views the collaboration between industry and technical education as a partnership that will help advance the industry, drive innovation and the adoption of best practices.

“For a manufacturer like ClarkDietrich Building Systems to provide the materials, engineering and time for this competition shows their commitment to moving the industry forward,” said Worsham. “The experience gained through this competition will broaden the student’s technical education and will surely have a trickle down from the competition to the classroom.”
In addition to the product donation, Terry Westerman, vice president of marketing at ClarkDietrich Building System, is a member of the technical committee for the carpentry competition.

“We are thrilled to have again partnered with an organization like SkillsUSA that provides valuable skills and hands-on experience that allow students to excel in trade careers like carpentry and construction practices,” said Westerman. “We look forward to seeing the competition continue to grow and wish all the participants the best of luck.”

The patented ProSTUD Drywall Framing System combines innovative design with high-strength steel that sets the industry benchmark for high-performance drywall framing. The diamond embossed web creates stiffness, reducing flange fade and screw spinout during drywall installation, and the strong, lightweight stud and track cuts and handles easier than conventional flat studs.

RedHeader RO is designed to replace conventional boxed headers and built up jambs and provides better results in half the time.  One-piece headers and jambs eliminate the additional suds, track and screws required to frame conventional rough openings. The adjustable Drop’N Lock™ Clip makes field adjustments a snap and provides a flat surface for smooth drywall finishes.
